New housing facility for medical students goes up in Penticton

PENTICTON – Medical students and locum physicians at Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH) will soon have a brand new place to call home. A new modular student housing facility was placed on site Saturday near the hospital’s psychiatric unit.

The facility will replace an aging trailer near PRH’s parking lot entrance, which was used as a residence for medical students for 30 years.

Janice Perino, the executive director of the Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation, says when students go to Penticton and get a taste of the lifestyle in the Okanagan Similkameen, they’re more likely to stay.

“They’re more likely to stay or even go on to some of the smaller communities, so it’s a win-win for everybody,” says Perino. “That’s why we felt it was so important to do it.”

She says the facility will be known as the Lloyd and Lota Jobling House in honour of the Penticton residents who donated more than $500,000 from their estate for the project.
