TORONTO — Social media lit up Sunday night as viewers noticed Joan Rivers was not included in the In Memoriam montage.

Rivers was a staple on the Oscars red carpet for many years and had a few small roles in movies during her career. She also directed 1978’s Rabbit Test.

Rivers, who died in September, had cameos in Iron Man 3, The Smurfs and The Muppets Take Manhattan and did voice work on several other projects.

In a statement, the Academy explained: “Joan Rivers is among the many worthy artists and filmmakers we were unfortunately unable to feature in the In Memoriam segment of this year’s Oscar show. She is, however, included in our In Memoriam gallery on Oscar.com.”

Other stars who were not included in the tribute include Taylor Negron, Jan Hooks, Elaine Stritch and Polly Bergen.

On Twitter, some people noted Philip Seymour Hoffman, Shirley Temple and Harold Ramis — who all died in 2014 — were not part of the In Memoriam segment. All three were honoured on last year’s Oscars show.

Among the stars who did make the cut were Robin Williams, Mike Nichols, Lauren Bacall, Edward Herrmann, Mickey Rooney, and Maya Angelou.
