WATCH: No sentence was handed down to Christopher Husbands Friday for his role in the 2012 Eaton Centre shooting.
TORONTO – The man found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of two men at Toronto’s Eaton Centre mall returns to court today for a sentencing hearing.
Christopher Husbands, 25, was also found guilty of five counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The second-degree murder convictions carry a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 to 25 years, and the Crown has said it will ask for a lengthy parole period.
Husbands admitted to the shootings and his legal team had put forward a defence of not criminally responsible due to post-traumatic stress disorder.
His lawyer Dirk Derstine says Husbands is remorseful and will appeal.
The June 2012 shooting in the crowded food court sparked a frenzied mass exodus of the sprawling multi-level shopping centre and left five wounded in addition to the two men who died.
