WATCH: Camera captures moment shots fired at Seattle police officers

TORONTO – A video has been released by Seattle police that shows three officers engaging in a dramatic gun battle New Year’s Eve.

The officers were returning to a home at 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 after a second report of a domestic dispute involving a man who had allegedly kicked in a door inside the home.

Approximately five minutes later, the officers were questioning the suspect outside while he sat on the hood of a patrol car. An active camera was inside, recording the exchange.

Moments later, their priorities changed.

Police report that a speeding car was headed in their direction with someone in a trailing vehicle opening fire on the first. The officers, meanwhile, were directly in the line of fire.

“The officers were in very real danger,” SPD spokesman Drew Fowler told the Seattle Times.

Seattle police returned fire after making sure the domestic violence suspect was safely shielded by the patrol car.

Nobody was injured during the gun battle. According to the Seattle Times, the vehicle that had been speeding stopped after suffering extensive damage. Those inside that vehicle were interviewed and are cooperating with police. However, the suspect who fired the shots escaped in the other vehicle.

The Seattle Police department has confirmed that all three officers are now on paid administrative leave per regulations.

“We are very grateful and thankful for the fact that they did not get hit,” Fowler told KOMO.

An investigation is ongoing while homicide detectives continue to search for the gunman.
