SPRINGHILL, N.S. – Officials at a correctional facility in Nova Scotia say they are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man who was found unresponsive in his cell.

Correctional Service Canada says Gary Leigh Sloan was found Tuesday at Springhill Institution, but offered no other details.

Staff did CPR and emergency services were called, but they say he could not be resuscitated.

The correctional service says Sloan had been serving a sentence of five years and four months for various offences dating back to 2013.

In a statement, corrections officials said police and the coroner have been notified, while Correctional Service Canada will review the incident.

The service issued a separate release saying the medium-security federal institution had been locked down to allow staff to conduct a general search.
