TORONTO – A 40-year-old man faces 16 charges in connection with a large fire which destroyed a rowhouse in Kensington Market on Dec. 1.
Sean Gellvear, 40, was arrested Monday and charged with 16 offences including four counts of arson, having a disregard for human life and five counts of mischief over $5,000.
He appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Firefighters responded to the Oxford Street rowhouse shortly before 1 a.m. on Dec. 1 to find the 100-year-old two-storey home on fire.
The blaze is believed to have started on the balconey and spread throughout three units. The roof collapsed on two of the houses.
The damage is pegged at around $1 million.
A man in his 60s was asleep inside the home at the time and was reportedly alerted to the fire by his dog.
