Murder victim’s friends say her death made issue of domestic violence hit home

CALGARY- Friends of a Calgary woman murdered last summer are organizing a celebration of her life this weekend in hopes of raising awareness about domestic violence.

On September 14, 2014, Susan Elko was found stabbed to death in a Mission condo she shared with her boyfriend. 24-year-old Scott Ferguson faces a charge of second-degree murder in connection with her death.

“She always had a smile on her face and wanted to help somebody,” said Liberty Loreque, a close friend of Elko’s. “None of us knew him (Ferguson) well. The Thursday before Sue passed, we had a lunch and we had done some talking. She mentioned they were fighting and she asked him to leave.”

Elko’s friends say they knew she was in a relationship for about a year but didn’t realize she was in a bad situation until it was too late.

“We never think these situations are going to happen to us or our loved ones,” said Michael Ciccaglione, owner of the Black Cat Lounge and Grill where Elko worked. “But they do.”

The Black Cat Lounge and Grill  is hosting a fundraiser from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday to raise money for both the YWCA Sheriff King Home as well as the Elko family.
