Calgary HandiBus to cease bus operations in 2015

CALGARY – Calgary HandiBus says it will have to stop operating its bus fleet.

The company sent out a letter to employees on Thursday, informing them that an indepedant study recently found their funding model is no longer sustainable.

Calgary HandiBus is one of four service providers that Access Calgary, a division of Calgary Transit, uses to provide trips for Calgarians with disabilities.

HandiBus hasn’t determined a specific date when it will stop operating its buses, but says it will likely be sometime in 2015.

Calgary Transit says they have already begun working to ensure service for Calgarians with disabilities is not impacted.

Calgary HandiBus intends to continue as a not-for-profit organization which will advocate for Calgarians with disabilities and continue to raise money to buy vehicles for organizations that provide special needs transportation, including Access Calgary.
