Man trying to sell stolen cell phone charged with assaulting Halifax police

HALIFAX – A 28-year-old man is facing numerous charges after allegedly stealing a cell phone and then fighting police officers who tried to arrest him when he was selling it.

It started Monday when a man who claimed he had seen his stolen cell phone for sale online called police and reported that he had arranged to meet the suspect to buy the phone.

Police responded around 1:30 p.m. to Kaye Street and Young Street and when they tried to arrest the suspect, identified by police as Jedidiah Fortune, he allegedly resisted and began to fight with the officers.

More officers arrived after a stun gun failed to subdue him and were eventually able to take him into custody.

No officers were injured, and the cell phone at the centre of the dispute was recovered.

Fortune is charged with several offences, including two counts assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, possession of stolen property and four counts of breaching a court order.

He is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court Tuesday.
