KELOWNA, B.C. — Thanks to Environment Canada, Okanagan Wetlands took in $100,000 for the second phase of their strategy.

The announcement on Friday came from the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) and Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA).

According to OBWB, phase one of the Okanagan Wetlands strategy was focused on data collection, public outreach, prioritization and mapping.

Phase two is taking a more hands-on approach where organizers will complete six different projects.

“Wetlands, once considered a nuisance and a waste of valuable land, are an important part of our community,” stresses OBWB Chair Doug Findlater.

“Today, more than 85% of the Okanagan Wetlands and natural riparian areas are gone and remaining areas are at risk of loss, making the need for work in these areas all the more important,” Findlater adds.

OBWB says three of the six projects are slated to be completed by March 31, 2015 and the other three by March the following year.
