VANCOUVER – Three people had to be taken to Lions Gate Hospital on Saturday night after intentionally ingesting GHB before going out for drinks.
GHB, commonly known as the ‘date rape’ drug, may make people feel relaxed, euphoric, or sleepy. It may also cause people to lose their inhibitions. Effects may be felt between 10 and 20 minutes.
North Vancouver RCMP say they, along with BC Ambulance and North Vancouver District Fire Department, responded to a report of a woman that had collapsed after having taken GHB. Staff at a North Vancouver bar had found the woman passed out in the bathroom.
By the time emergency personnel arrived, two more people were in medical distress, after also taking GHB. All three were rushed to Lions Gate Hospital where they received emergency medical treatment requiring ventilation to assist in their breathing. The two women and a man were kept in overnight and released the next day.
Police are investigating the source of the drug.
Police are taking this opportunity to send another warning to the public, that in taking illicit drugs such as GHB, you are taking significant risks with your personal health and safety
, said North Vancouver RCMP’s, Cpl. Richard De Jong. This trio survived because they received quick medical care, the dangers are very real in taking GHB.
