2 charged after truck flees RIDE check, kills driver in Brantford

BRANTFORD, Ont. – Police have charged two people after they allege a stolen pickup truck fled a drunk-driving checkpoint west of Hamilton and crashed into a car, killing its driver.

Provincial police say the truck allegedly tried to evade the checkpoint last Friday, and crashed into the car in Brantford after police tried to stop the stolen vehicle.

They say the driver of the car, 18-year-old Ashley Lerno, died in hospital on Wednesday.

Forty-eight-year-old Richard Gable, of Brantford, is now charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, flight causing death while pursued by peace officer and four other counts.

David Gregory, 34 and also of Brantford, faces one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Both appeared in court Friday and have been remanded into custody pending their next appearance.
