Inside the new international terminal expansion at YYC

CALGARY – The Calgary International Airport showed off the progress that’s being made on their international terminal expansion on Friday, as they gave members of the media a behind-the-scenes look.

Although the facility is still under construction, there are already several state-of-the-art features on display, including a brand new baggage transport and sorting system.

Officials say the new baggage systems can move up to 8,000 pieces of luggage an hour.

In addition, the new facility is heated entirely through the floor. Only the air 15 feet above floor level will actually be warmed, which officials say is a more economical and environmentally friendly way of keeping the site warm.

Another feature is the compact transit systems, which are essentially conveyor belts that carry up to 10 passengers at a time.

The new expansion is expected to double the size of the existing international terminal. It is anticipated it will be completed in the fall of 2015.
