Government covers legal fees for man accused in double homicide

CALGARY – A Calgary man accused in the stabbing death of his wife and her friend  will not have to represent himself in court after all.

Hari Pal is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the violent killing of his estranged wife Sanjula Devi and her friend Fahmida Velji-Visram.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It’s alleged Pal killed the women while they were collecting some of Devi’s belongs at a home along Penbrooke Drive on May 4th.

Pal was originally turned down for legal aid, but now the government has reversed its decision.

“I have to eat crow on this,” says Criminal Defence Lawyer Andre Ouellette. “Because Alberta Justice in the end consented to an order whereby justice would ensure he had counsel.”

It’s still unclear who will actually represent Pal.

He will be assigned a lawyer when he is back in court at the end of the month.

Pal has not yet had a bail hearing.
