Calgary city council approves more taxis and fare increase

CALGARY – As the number of cabs on city streets increases, so will the price patrons pay for a ride.

City council approved 383 new taxi licenses on Monday, 14 of which will be for accessible cabs.

Councillors decided to release 126 licenses by December.

They will evaluate how those new licenses are working, before scheduling the release of the rest in March.

Council also approved a hike to taxi rates by 8.1%, which will take effect immediately.

There are currently just over 1,500 cabs on Calgary streets.
