Toronto Morning: What you need to know today

IN THE NEWS…

  • Doctors say Ford has an abdominal tumour diagnosed as malignant liposarcoma – a type of cancer that arises from fat cells and can attack a variety of soft tissues. The doctor leading Ford’s care team says the tumour – which is 12 centimetres by 12 centimetres in size – is an aggressive one that is being met with an equally aggressive treatment plan.
  • Liposarcoma is extremely rare and the tumour is fairly aggressive but doctors are optimistic, Dr. Zane Cohen said at a press conference at Mount Sinai Hospital. It is a rare type of cancer that begins in the fat cells. It’s in the soft tissues and could start in any part of the body – the tendons, fatty tissues, nerves, blood vessels, and muscles.
  • Polls have opened across Scotland in a referendum that will decide whether the country leaves its 307-year-old union with England and becomes an independent state.
  • City buses in the nation’s capital will stop this morning in sombre tribute to the six people killed when an OC Transpo bus collided with a Via Rail passenger train one year ago.
  • A new musical about Toronto’s mayor will open tonight despite Rob Ford’s cancer diagnosis — but the creators say they’re scrapping a planned party and red carpet.
