CALGARY – Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil for a missing family on Thursday, trying to stay positive.
It has been 12 days since five-year-old Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents, Alvin and Kathryn Liknes, were last seen, sparking an Amber Alert.
Their family continues to hold out hope that the trio will be found safe and sound.
They were joined by hundreds of Calgarians, many of them complete strangers, at a vigil at the Parkhill Community Centre on Thursday night.
The gathering was held just a short distance from the Liknes’ home.
Nathan’s parents thanked everyone for their show of solidarity, and asked them to remain hopeful.
“We’re very hopeful that they are out there,” said a tearful Jennifer O’Brien. “There’s no doubt in our mind. We’ve just got to find them. Police are doing everything they can do, and I know they are on a lead and I truly believe they will figure it out.”
“I am hopeful in every way. We all are, so I hope this [will] be a happy story, because I think it’s going to.”

Police have spent countless hours scouring several locations of interest as the search for the missing family continues.
On Friday, they headed back to the Spyhill Landfill, which they had searched previously on Wednesday, before combing through the East Calgary landfill on Thursday.
Officials say they will make a decision as to whether to search the remaining Shepard landfill at a later date.
In addition, investigators remain on scene at a rural home near Airdrie which has been probed for almost a week.
They are still asking rural property owners, including businesses, to check through their land for anything suspicious.
