Anti-nudity motion defeated at TDSB meeting

TORONTO – The Toronto District School Board voted down a controversial motion Wednesday night that suggested taking action on public nudity at this year’s Pride Parade.

Trustee Sam Sotiropoulos was behind a motion that would ask the city to enforce the country’s nudity laws during the event.

However, it was defeated in a vote by a margin of 16 to 6.

Some trustees saw the support for nudity as a vote for freedom of expression.

“There is case law I believe where judges do say that public nudity is allowed in the context of certain events such as Pride Parade,” said TDSB Trustee Maria Rodrigues.

“For me, it’s about human rights and the right to express yourself and I want our students in our school board to feel good about themselves, to feel included in everything at the school board.”

At the same meeting, another motion came up to reaffirm the school board’s support for Pride Toronto.

It passed by a count of 19 to 3.
