Driver trapped in vehicle after knocking down power pole

CALGARY – Snow-covered roads could be to blame for a crash in the city’s southeast on Wednesday that took down a power pole.

It happened just after 6 p.m. on 42nd Avenue near Highfield Road S.E.

A white van slammed into a power pole, knocking it over and leaving live wires lying on top of the vehicle.

The female driver wasn’t injured, but found herself trapped inside the van until Enmax was able to shut off power in the area.

She was eventually helped out of the vehicle by emergency crews.

Several businesses in the area were without power while crews worked to rescue the driver, and fire crews had to control traffic in the area because traffic lights were out.

A few hours later, a power pole was knocked over by a vehicle involved in a four-car crash on McKnight Boulevard just west of 4 St. N.W.

The crash sent one person to hospital and caused crews to close down westbound McKnight Blvd.

No power outages were reported.
