Mom of three helps Toronto moms in need

TORONTO–A baby in need is a priority indeed.  That’s precisely what Gwen Broda thought when she founded The New Mom Project.

“The New Mom Project is a really great initiative that was started to allow new moms in Toronto to donate their gently used items to help other moms in need,” Broda said.

Started in January, the project has received an overwhelming amount of support from local moms. So much so that Broda’s own home has become a donation drop-off spot.  As a result, dedicated volunteers such as Maria Torres-Hives have stepped in to lend a helping hand.

“I’m very lucky to have the support I do at home,” Torres-Hives said.  “You know, there’s many moms I know out there that don’t have that kind of support.  So seeing Gwen want to help out other moms really inspired me and I wanted to be part of that.”

The project emphasizes the first year in a baby’s life, looking for newborn and size one diapers, wipes, sleepers, blankets and toys.  The project is also in high need of unopened bath products, newborn sized-clothing (new or nearly new) and storage bins.

Donor to the cause and a new mom herself Gisella Barron was happy to help with her latest donation which included baby formula, diapers, a bathtub and a gently-used car seat.

“I think it’s great that you’re able to pass on things rather than buying new because everything is so expensive,” Barron said.  “And a mom in need, you know, it’s great that you’re able to help them out and get them off to a good start.”

Broda couldn’t agree more.

“We think our package can provide, that psychological benefit, that peace of mind that you can open this up and think:  “I don’t have to go out and worry about buying all these thing,” Broda said.
