Huge avalanche blocks road in Revelstoke

REVELSTOKE — Crews are working to clear a huge avalanche that has come down on Airport Way near Revelstoke.

The wall of snow tore down Mount Cartier on Sunday – covering about 100 metres of roadway, and stopping just short of the Columbia River.

Transportation officials say it started as a dry-slab slide near the top of Mount Cartier, eventually turning into a wet avalanche by the time it hit Airport Way.

They don’t believe anybody was caught in the slide.

Witnesses say there weren’t any vehicles in the area at the time and nobody has been reported missing.

Crews are working to reopen part of the roadway later today but say a full opening will likely take longer.

The avalanche danger in Revelstoke has forced organizers of the Swatch Freeride Tour scheduled to begin March 14 to cancel the event.
