Former Penticton councillor pleads guilty to sexual assault

PENTICTON — A former Penticton city councillor has pleaded guilty to sexual assault.

Gary Leaman pleaded guilty on January 29 to two counts of sexual assault.

Details of the assaults are expected to be released at his sentencing hearing. His next court date is slated for March 26.

The charges were laid four months ago.

Leaman served on Penticton city council between 2002 and 2005 and once ran for mayor but lost to former mayor Dan Ashton.

Leaman is a former president of the Penticton Chamber of Commerce and former manager of the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre.

Up until now, Leaman’s name was protected by a publication ban.  Reporter Joe Fries from the Penticton Western News successfully applied to have the ban lifted.
