INVERMERE, B.C. – A 12-year-old girl has died in a skiing accident at the Panorama Mountain Village resort in Invermere B.C.

The girl, who is from a small community near Saskatoon, was skiing with her father on the Millennium run when she lost control, veered off the run and struck a tree on the side of the trail. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

She has now been identified as Rachel Dawn Deugau of Langham, Saskatchewan.

A number of other skiers who were in the vicinity rushed to help. Ski Patrol arrived within minutes and initiated CPR.

“The hill conditions, daylight conditions, were described as good,”said Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac with Columbia Valley RCMP. “The hill was groomed, visibility was good, so it was just a tragic accident, hard to explain.”

CEO and president of Panorama Mountain Village, Steve Paccagnan said in a statement, “our hearts and prayers go out to the family. This is a tragic accident and we are doing everything we can to assist the family during this trying time.”

“We are all deeply saddened by this event and I want to thank the entire Emergency Response Team for their quick response and professionalism. They did all they could to save this little girl.”
