WINNIPEG – Manitoba had more homicides per capita than any other province in 2012 and Winnipeg had the second-highest rate among Canadian cities, Statistics Canada says.
There were 52 homicides in Manitoba reported by police to Statistics Canada in 2012, and 33 in Winnipeg. The homicide rate per 100,000 people was 4.1 in Manitoba and 4.09 in Winnipeg.

There were 542 homicides in Canada in 2012, or 1.56 per 100,000 people, a 10 per cent drop from 2011 and the lowest national homicide rate recorded since 1966.

There were 53 homicides in Manitoba in 2011 and 39 in Winnipeg that year, for rates of 4.23 per 100,000 people in Manitoba and 4.92 in Winnipeg.
Thunder Bay, Ont., posted the highest homicide rate among metropolitan areas in 2012. There were seven homicides, which translates to a rate of 5.81 per 100,000 people in the small Northern Ontario town.
Saskatchewan had the second-highest per capita homicide rate among provinces at 2.69 and Alberta was third at 2.19. Nunavut, with five homicides, had 14.84 homicides per 100,000 population, and the Northwest Territories, where there were also five homicides, had 11.53 homicides per 100,000 people.

Regina had the third-highest homicide rate among Canadian cities, at 3.06 per 100,000 people.
