Police release new information in unsolved homicide

WINNIPEG – Jacqueline Sanderson flips through a photo album, remembering her daughter. There won’t be any new memories — the 23-year-old was found slain in 2012.

“I miss her so much. We were best friends,” Sanderson said Tuesday.

Simone Sanderson, her oldest child, was seen on Aug. 26, 2012, in the North End of Winnipeg, just weeks after her 23rd birthday. Her lifeless body was found a week later in an empty lot at Burrows Avenue and Main Street.

“She was discovered by a passerby,” homicide detective Marc Philippot said, showing a reporter the spot. “As you can tell, this area is a heavy traffic area — both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.”

It’s been over a year and the trail has gone cold.

For the first time, homicide detectives confirmed Sanderson was a sex-trade worker, something she got involved in a couple of months before her murder to pay for a recently acquired drug habit, her mom said.

“She lost her fiancé, her young son — she was depressed,” said Jacqueline Sanderson. “She turned to drugs. There was nothing I could do to stop her.”

Simone Sanderson often solicited clients on social media sites such as Facebook, police said, and they believe someone she interacted with may know what happened to her.

She was found with upper-body injuries and covered by leaves and debris. She was wearing a black sports bra and a pink skort.

“Please come forward, please let us know what happen,” Jacqueline Sanderson said. “Give us some information so we can have closure.”

Anyone with information can remain anonymous but is asked to call detectives at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
