Minimum wage in Quebec will go up to $13.10 as planned on May 1 as the coronavirus pandemic continues to hamper the province's economy.

A $0.60 increase is bringing Quebec's general minimum wage to $13.10 per hour, Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity Jean Boulet announced on Wednesday. 

The increase represents additional earnings between $400 and $650 a year, depending on the number of hours worked and the employee's family situation.

Quebec unions believe the raise is not enough.

Quebec’s minimum wage will officially go up to $12 an hour as of May 1. The raise of 75 cents marks the largest salary increase in the province’s history.

Several issues were brought to the forefront with protesters urging the future government to consider building a more just and equitable society by raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

The 75-cent increase, from the current rate of $11.25, is the highest rise in minimum wage in Quebec's history.

Montrealers took to the streets to demand a $15 minimum wage.

Hundreds of Quebecers, including unions, anti-poverty activists and students, gathered in Montreal to call for a $15 hourly minimum wage in the province.
