Most public events to remember the Royal Newfoundland Regiment soldiers who died during the First World War were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The conference and festival was scheduled to run from April 29 to May 3 in St. John's, N.L.

Premier Dwight Ball thanked the reservists and soldiers Tuesday for supporting residents after the Jan. 17 winter storm that dumped more than 76 centimetres of snow on St. John's in a single day.

The provincial capital made the initial declaration last Friday, as a punishing blizzard left parts of eastern Newfoundland buried under more than 76 centimetres of snow.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan says 450 troops - including about 175 reservists - will be in Newfoundland Tuesday to help the province dig out from the storm.

Environment Canada has issued blizzard and wind warnings for much of the island.

A long-term lease agreement has not yet been reached with the St. John's Edge of the National Basketball League of Canada and the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL.
