Global Transportation Hub seeks permanent shuttle service

Loblaw hired a shuttle bus to transport its workers to and from work.

REGINA – An influx of workers to Regina comes with some challenges including how to get people to and from work.

Close to 800 workers are employed at the Global Transportation Hub (GTH), with 600 of them at Loblaw and a majority are new to Canada.

“A lot of them don’t have their own vehicles. A lot of them are new to the country,” said Darcy Scott, Loblaw General Manager. “Until they can afford to get their own vehicles or choose to, we need a way to get them to work and get them home safely.”

Loblaw hired a shuttle bus to provide a total of about 5,000 rides per month from five pick-up locations around Regina to the distribution centre.

“We would not have the employees we have without the shuttle service,” said Scott.

However, the GTH is looking for a more permanent solution. It’s issued a request for proposal to hire a bus operator to shuttle workers back and forth.

The city doesn’t provide any bus service to the GTH and the mayor says it’s not the city’s responsibility.

“Typically and historically we do not provide a bus service for an employer,” said Mayor Michael Fougere.
