EDMONTON – The intersection of 57 Avenue and 111 Street was shut down late Monday morning while emergency crews responded to a collision between a pedestrian and an LRT train.
An 82-year-old man was struck around 11:30 Monday morning. He was treated by EMS paramedics and taken to the University of Alberta hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
“There was an elderly male who was crossing the tracks heading westbound on the pedestrian crosswalk there, and was subsequently struck by a southbound LRT,” said Insp. Chad Tawfik, a duty officer with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS).

“They tended to his injures on scene, they weren’t believed to be life-threatening at this time… Fortunately, the train had slowed quite a bit before it struck him… he was basically underneath the front of the train, and was pushed a short distance.”
The elderly man is now being treated in hospital.
“They’re assessing him further for any additional internal injuries that may have occurred, but at this point in time, they’re deemed non life-threatening.”
Police say it’s believed the lights and bells indicating an LRT train was coming were working at the time.
“Information from witnesses on scene indicate that the signals were operating at the time of the incident,” said Tawfik.
Police will be looking at video evidence to confirm the events leading up to the collision.
Edmonton police shut down the eastbound and westbound lanes of 57 Avenue at 111 Street while they investigated.
LRT trains are continuing to operate on a single track. Officials believe they will be fully operational by 2:30 p.m.
