WINNIPEG – Notre Dame Avenue was closed from Portage Avenue to King Street as firefighters doused a fire at 213 Notre Dame, the former Electric Railway Chambers.

An electrical problem in a panel between the buidling’s third and fourth floors caused smoke but power was isolated and the problem was complained, fire officials said.

Multiple crews responded at about 5:30 a.m. to deal with the situation in the 11-storey 1913 building, which the City of Winnipeg has recognized as historically significant. Notre Dame was closed near Portage Avenue until about 7 a.m.
