Toronto police say two people were injured after a shooting in the city’s downtown core on Monday morning that may have resulted from a possible road rage incident.
Emergency crews were called to Yonge and Charles streets, just south of Bloor Street, at around 6 a.m. for reports of a shooting.
Duty Insp. Michelle Olszevski told reporters they took a man and a woman in their 20s to a trauma centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Olszevski also said prior to the shooting, officers had received a call for stunt driving involving multiple vehicles on Yonge Street shortly before 6 a.m.
She said the vehicles and occupants of the vehicles involved in the stunt driving call were also allegedly in front of the same address on Charles Street where the shooting occurred.
“There is a possibility that this incident has occurred as a result of a road rage,” Olszevski said.
Olszevski said the suspects fled in a black SUV and headed westbound towards Bay Street and northbound on Bay Street. She said there is no suspect description available and it is unclear how many suspects were involved.
A witness told Global News that she is a student at the University of Toronto and was out for her morning walk when she heard the gunshots ring out.
“I heard about 12 to 13 fire shots and I just rushed out, I didn’t look back and I didn’t stop. This is very scary, to be honest,” the student said.
Olszevski also confirmed there were multiple gunshots fired but unclear how many people were shooting.
There are road closures in the area and police are advising motorists to take alternate routes.
