BLACK DIAMOND, Alta.- The June flood that tore through Alberta continues to cost businesses dearly, especially in some small towns.
One of them is Marv’s Classic Soda shop in Black Diamond, a 1950s style diner that’s a well-loved weekend destination for road-trippers. But over the past year, business has slowed down.
It started last spring, when heavy rains kept customers away. Then, the floods hit, knocking out the bridge into Black Diamond.
The soda shop is now in danger of closing its doors for good.
“I’m down to rolling coins and cashing in American money to get enough money to pay the bills, so it’s getting near to the wire,” says owner Marv Garriott.
His isn’t the only business that’s suffering, which has prompted town officials to try and get the word out that the community is open for businesses.
