TORONTO — The new made-in-Canada sci-fi series Almost Human debuted Sunday night to largely rave reviews.

According to Laurel Brown of Zap2It, the show “does one of the hardest things on TV: make a futuristic, science-fiction world seem relevant and familiar to audiences.”

Set in a futuristic Los Angeles — but shot in Vancouver — Almost Human follows police officers partnered with androids (aka synthetics). The series stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Minka Kelly.

“It needs two protagonists who work in their respective roles, and this show may have hit the jackpot there,” she wrote.

Almost Human really is one of the best science-fiction shows to hit television in recent memory.”

The series airs in Canada on Global.

Tim Goodman of The Hollywood Reporter declared Almost Human “has enough polish, plot and action to bring viewers into a genre series that’s a welcome addition to broadcast television” and added the show “offers viewers something fresh and worthwhile.”

At Entertainment Weekly, Jeff Jensen calls the show “a slick, polished formulation of familiar dystopian future tropes elevated by an unusual and central relationship, well played by Urba and Ealy.”

Jensen said Almost Human “captures your imagination for a show that could explore our romance with technology, for better and worse, and how technology is simultaneously expanding and diminishing our humanity.”

Cory Barker of TV.com opined that Almost Human has the potential to grow into the best new series of the season.

“All the elements are here for a really solid, possibly fascinating show,” he wrote. “It’s nice to be really excited about a new show for once.”

At Television Blend, Kelly West said the series could be another must-watch Monday night drama “if Almost Human manages to live up to its potential in the episodes that follow its premiere.”

There were also some positive words for the show on social media. “Almost Human. OMG. OMG. Almost Human. OMG. OMG. OMG. Almost Human. ALMOST HUMAN. I need this show on constant repeat in my life. It is awesome,” tweeted Andrea. “I haven’t been this excited about a scifi show in years.”

Almost Human is scheduled to shoot in Vancouver until mid-December.

It airs Monday nights on Global.
