Apartment fire in southwest prompts second alarm

CALGARY- A second alarm had to be called in on Thursday morning, after fire broke out in an apartment building in the southwest.

It happened shortly before 11 a.m. at an eight-unit complex on Southampton Drive, in the community of Southwood.

When fire crews arrived, they could see smoke and flames, and called in a second alarm. They tried to search inside the building, but due to serious structural issues they had to retreat and battle the flames from outside.

Aerials were also used to fight the fire from above.

The unit where it started suffered significant damage, and the blaze also spread into a neighbouring unit.

Fortunately, no one was injured. It’s still not clear what sparked the fire.
