A 64-year-old man was arrested after an alleged attempted bank robbery and police standoff in Chilliwack on Thursday.

RCMP were called to a CIBC branch at Salish Plaza in the 9200-block of Young Road around 12:15 p.m.

In a media release, Upper Fraser Valley RCMP said all available patrol officers, the Integrated Emergency Response Team, RCMP Air Services and Police Dog Services flooded the area.

Mounties said officers “worked diligently to contain the situation and resolve the situation peacefully,” and that the man was taken into custody without incident in under 90 minutes.

As the incident unfolded, police urged people to avoid the area and called on the public not to share any information that could affect their response.

Mounties said they had engaged their Victim Services Unit for anyone who was affected by the incident.
