Remembering Canada’s ‘forgotten war’

It’s the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

An armistice signed in 1953 brought to an end three years of brutal fighting between communist North Korea and western-backed South Korea. Chinese forces joined in on the northern side and Canada was among several countries in a United Nations force, led by the U.S., fighting for the south.

Some 500 Canadians were killed in the war; on the 60th anniversary of its end, the Canadian government has declared 2013 the Year of the Korean War Veteran.

Global’s Focus Manitoba spoke to two Manitoba men, Ron Shephard and Mike Czuboka, who were part of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Korea. They survived the Battle of Kapyong, which saw the small force of Canadians hold off a massive Chinese attack that threatened the capital of South Korea, Seoul.
