Anti-HST petition ruled valid by B.C. judge

VANCOUVER – British Columbia’s tax revolt is moving full-steam ahead.

A B.C. Supreme Court judge on Friday ruled that a petition against the province’s controversial HST is valid.

The anti-HST campaign collected signatures from 10 per cent of constituents in all of the province’s 85 ridings – the amount needed to trigger a bill in the provincial legislature to repeal the unpopular tax.

The court ruling by B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman dismissed a challenge to the petition and its accompanying bill to extinguishing the tax, a challenge that was supported by the provincial government and a group of industries.

The court ruling means the bill can move to the legislature.

The anti-HST campaign was led by former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm.

"Today is a great day for the province, a great day for democracy. It is a great day for BC," said Vander Zalm. "We’ve won, we’ve won."
