Calgary Transit has a new training simulator for CTrain operators, the first of its kind in Canada.
Worth $1.8 million, Transit says using the simulator, instead of actual trains, will save money because training won’t disrupt service.
It also hopes it will improve safety, which is even more of a priority with three recent CTrain crashes within four days, two at the same location.
Drivers will be better equipped to respond to a real situation by learning how to drive the train in a controlled situation.
”It will help immensely,” says LRT training supervisor Mike Magee. “(When using an actual train for training), we couldn’t make a vehicle run a red light – that’s something drivers would experience only if it happened for real.”
The simulator includes every station in the city and all 60 kilometres of track.
The cab is an exact replica, complete with all the bells and whistles including motion and vibration .
About 100 drivers will be trained on the simulator over the next year.
