Editor’s note: The story has been updated to reflect a correction from EMS that two vehicles were involved in the collision, not one, as previously reported, as well as a correction from RCMP about the time the collision occurred.
Airdrie Rural RCMP is investigating a fatal collision that occurred north of Airdrie on Tuesday morning.
According to a news release, the collision occurred at around 11:57 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 2A and Dickson Stevenson Trail, an area south of Crossfield, Alta.
Police said an SUV turned north onto Highway 2A from Dickson Stevenson Trail when it was struck by a commercial vehicle that was heading south on Highway 2A.
Police said the man driving the SUV, a resident of Crossfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was a passenger in the SUV was taken to hospital in stable condition, according to police.
The semi-truck driver, a man in his 40s, was assessed at the scene but did not require transport to hospital.
An email from Airdrie Rural RCMP at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday said the area is closed to traffic and will be re-opened later Tuesday. The highway reopened before 4 p.m.
Police said drugs, alcohol and road conditions were not believed to be factors in the collision.
