Edmonton – Police are warning the public about the release of a man who preyed on women in Edmonton in the 1970s and 1980s.

Larry Takahashi is being released on an Unescorted Temporary Absence in Victoria, B.C. He’ll be living in a half-way house in Victoria until December 24.

In 1984, Takahashi was convicted of 14 charges, including four counts of rape, sexual assault with a weapon, and six counts of disguise with intent. He was given three life sentences.

The man known as the “Balaclava Rapist” entered homes and apartment buildings in Edmonton and sexually assaulted women while wearing a disguise.

Victoria police are issuing a warning about Takahashi’s release because the department believes he poses a significant risk of harm to women and teenage girls.

After December 24, the convicted offender will return to custody. Corrections Canada will then make a decision if the federal offender will be allowed future releases.

There are a number of conditions Takahashi must abide by during his release, including not consuming alcohol, reporting all interactions with women to his parole officer, and only residing in Victoria.

In 2003, Takahashi was released on day parole, but it was revoked in 2005 after a parole board was told he had met several times with a convicted sex offender in Vancouver. Takahashi was also caught in three other parole violations.
