WATCH: Chilly lake effect air brings snowfall north of GTA

TORONTO – The chilly air flowing across Southern Ontario has generated several centimetres of snow north of the Greater Toronto Area overnight.

Environment Canada says chilly northwest winds drifting over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes are causing organized lake effect flurries.

Regions north of Barrie, especially in areas near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, have reported several centimetres of snow.

Local accumulations of five slushy centimetres are likely in a few localities, especially in the Dundalk Highlands including such communities as Markdale, Hanover and Dundalk.

The main bands of flurries should move southwards on Thursday morning and change primarily to wet flurries or rain showers as the day wears on.

The weather may already be causing havoc for drivers. Ontario Provincial Police say there was a multi-vehicle crash along Highway 400 at Mapleview Drive around 6 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Motorists are advised to use caution if travelling in these regions as some road surfaces may become snow-covered and slippery.
