Albertans have opted to remain part of Canada — decisively voting to reject the idea of holding a formal referendum on separatism.
Elections Alberta began releasing the results of the province’s referendum on the topic late Monday night, with around 76 per cent of Albertans voting to remain part of Canada without any further deliberation.
The separatism question asked voters if Alberta should remain in Canada or if the provincial government should begin the legal process of holding a future binding referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada.
At watch parties, pro-Canada supporters cheered as independence proponents were somber — but resolute.
“Don’t mess with Canada!” Thomas Lukaszuk, former deputy premier and organizer of the pro-Canada forces, said to cheers at a watch party at the Polish Hall in central Edmonton.
Lukaszuk launched the Forever Canadian movement that collected more than 400,000 signatures from Albertans who agreed the province should remain in Canada.
“I think it’s a very strong signal to the rest of Canada and frankly, to the world, that Alberta is united — that this country cannot be broken up,” he said to Global News on Monday night as results began to be released. “It’s a message to the United States saying, ‘back off, you can’t break up Canada. We are as solid as solid gets.’”
“Canada is a united country and no one can take advantage of us.”
Monday’s results mirror more than half a year of polling, which since the beginning of 2026, has consistently shown about 70 per cent of Albertans want the province to remain in Canada.
In January, an Ipsos poll found about three in 10 residents supported independence, but a deeper dive revealed that when faced with the costs and consequences, only half of those interested in separatism were truly committed to following through.
Lukaszuk’s citizen initiative petition did not call for a referendum but instead wanted MLAs in the Alberta Legislature to vote on the issue — which he maintains is what should have happened.
“We just spent $130 million in our referendum, plus additional dollars, that will add up for nothing. We knew that this was the answer. (Premier Danielle Smith) could have called a vote in the Legislature and spared us a lot of division, a lot of expenses.”
The referendum drew international attention — and not for good reason, he said.
“They’re wondering what’s happening in Canada. Are we a safe investment environment? Is this a country that could potentially split and become unstable?” he said.
“This sends a message that none of that is true.”
About eight blocks away, a rally for separatists at a restaurant turned quiet as the numbers rolled in.
Get breaking National news
“Our movement isn’t going anywhere,” said Jeffrey Rath, prominent conservative politics activist and co-founder of the Alberta Prosperity Project.
“We’ve dominated the conversation in the last year. We’ve been educating Albertans on the benefits of independence, and we’re going to continue moving forward.”
Rath shrugged off the early results, saying in his view it’s still important to recognize the hundreds of thousands of people who voted to leave Canada.
“We’re absolutely thrilled with the work that we’ve done and the fact that we’ve created a political movement that’s going to go forward from here,” he said.
Grievances in Alberta towards the federal government are not new.
The nuanced disgruntlement harkens back decades: Alberta farmers feeling shortchanged by the monopoly the Canadian Wheat Board had over crop prices and their sales, anger over how Pierre Trudeau’s National Energy Program decimated jobs and investment in the province’s oil and gas sector in the 1980s, and more recent grievances over the Justin Trudeau government’s policies on energy investment and public health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We’re sick and tired of being regulated by Ottawa,” Rath said.
“We’re sick and tired of the way that we’re being treated by Ottawa.”
Four years ago, Alberta separatists worked to oust former premier Jason Kenney and get Smith elected leader of the UCP — and Rath has been vocal about his desire to now get rid of her too.
“Moving forward from here, our hundreds of thousands of members and volunteers are going to be committed to taking back ownership of the (UCP),” he said.
Rath is pushing for a special general meeting to discuss whether Smith still has the confidence of the party’s base.
Smith, who said she voted to stay in Canada, promised a simple 50 per cent plus one majority would carry the day and that there would be no followup referendum for the rest of her UCP government’s mandate.
“Thank you, Alberta!” Smith wrote in a statement on social media, responding to the results.
“I’m very pleased to see the initial results from Elections Alberta show widespread support for remaining in Canada. Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada.”
Smith’s United Conservative Party never campaigned on holding a separation vote in the 2023 provincial election, but this year Smith said some Albertans’ anger with the state of affairs under former Liberal prime minister Justin Trudeau boiled over into hundreds of thousands signing petitions for and against Confederation.
She said a referendum was necessary to resolve the matter once and for all, adding repeatedly if the vote went the way polling has suggested for months, she expected everyone to accept it and move on.
Smith said she would give an address on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. to detail where the province goes from here.
Alberta Opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi’s reaction to the results was short and simple.
“Thank you! We saved Canada. Now, we save Alberta,” he posted to his social media.
The balloting completes a winding process that began in May, when Smith called the referendum.
Debate turned some neighbours against neighbours. It disrupted public events.
The Alberta flag morphed into a disputed de facto banner for those who want to separate.
There were rallies and speeches, sign wars, stacks of policy documents, analyses and warnings of economic apocalypse should Alberta try to go its own way.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Albertans choose to build a stronger Canada.
“They chose unity, to build together, and to take care of each other,” he said in a statement.
He added the results on the defining question of separation mean that Albertans and all Canadians will move forward together with “renewed purpose and high ambition.”
“Canada is so much greater than the sum of its parts. Now it is our opportunity to take all that we have been given as Canadians – and we have been given the greatest country in the world – and make our country better for all of us.”
By law, officials must count all votes by hand within 48 hours. Question 10 — about separation — was counted first.
Early results were supposed to start being released at 8 p.m. MT — once the final ballot was cast and all polling stations closed — but several locations opened late, pushing back that timeline by more than three hours.
The referendum asked residents 10 government-initiated questions, though public and political attention largely focused on the question asking Albertans whether they want to remain in Canada or proceed with a binding referendum on leaving Confederation.
The referendum, announced Feb. 19, initially included nine questions pertaining to immigration and the Constitution. The question on independence, added back in May by Smith, is the tenth that voters were asked to mark an X on.
The separation question was added after Smith said she disagreed with the ruling of a Court of King’s Bench judge that quashed a separatist petition in May, saying the provincial government had a duty to consult with First Nations before Stay Free Alberta was allowed to gather signatures.
She said because the proposed referendum would not “directly trigger separation,” the court ruling would not apply.
Interest in the outcome of the referendum was high even before Monday’s official voting day.
More than 1.35 million votes were cast in both last week’s advance polls and by special mail-in ballots — a significant increase over the roughly 810,000 who voted that way in the 2023 provincial election.
The use of special ballots increased tenfold in the referendum compared to that election, with a total of 519,082 mail-in ballots received by Elections Alberta by the cut-off date.
The remaining nine questions in the referendum surround immigration and constitutional issues.
The immigration questions ask Albertans whether the province should have more say over who comes to the province to work and whether it’s time to put more limitations — and potentially introduce fees — on some who arrive seeking health care and education.
The constitutional questions ask Albertans to bless talks with other provinces to wrest power from the federal government and abolish the Senate.
Smith, who for years has said she supports a “sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” said the first nine questions are meant to give the province leverage in negotiations with Ottawa.
She said needs a yes on the remaining nine questions to get a mandate to bargain for a better deal with Carney.
Carney came to Alberta last week to rally pro-Canada forces and to agree to disagree with Smith. He urged Albertans to reject the nine remaining questions.
Elections Alberta hired more than 48,000 workers to count ballots, which is happening around the clock.
The results of those nine questions should be completed and announced by Wednesday. Officials will count ballots in order from question one to nine. Timelines depend on location closing times and voter turnout.

TRUDEAU AND SON BOTH DID ENORMOUS DECISIVE DAMAGE TO WESTERN CANADA AND THE NWT
THE BALL IS IN OTTAWA’S COURT TO CORRECT IT WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT.
ALBERTA HAS SPOKEN
TIME FOR THE REST OF WESTERN CANADA TO SUPPORT A PROIVINCE OF PROPRIETY
Of course Alberta won’t seperate….
But before all you blue haired Liberals get too smug, wait for the other 8 questions….
I wonder if it will even get a story if things go wrong for Czarney
All hat no cattle Albertans for sure. Reminds me of the skirt wearing Scots when push came to shove.
So the Wildrose and their separatist agenda was derailed by the leader that they admittedly put into power to run the UPC after they derailed Kennedy. Now they want to go after the floor crossing Smith failed them as she knew that this referendum was not going to work and she flipped from a separatist to save her job which was against what the separatists wanted her to do!
It is time to get out rid of the Wildrose disease that has spread amongst the UPC and get back to what Made Alberta Great which was a lower cost of living and a low tax base.
We need a new direction and one that will take out both the UPC and NDP from winning another election and one that will put Alberta back to a unified Canadian power house of a province. What we have now is a bit tiresome and very costly like this wasted referendum that cost millions.
Even though 76% voted to stay in Canada, Rath says he will continue the push for separatism. Clearly, he isn’t democratic, which leads me to wonder what is he?
Independent of how you voted, is this someone you can trust?
To those who don’t want to be a part of Canada, the US border is not far away.
This is what was expected. And to all the separatists who kept saying that ipsos was only polling liberal’s, I guess that went by the way side. Typical Conspiracy Theorists, with their tin foil hats..
FYI, I was able to vote for this while staying in Florida for the past couple year. No idea what is going on up there, lol but guess I’ll just stay here.. kept a PO box and some land that’s garbage i keep paying taxes to, people told me it entitled me to a vote… makes you wonder who else is voting in the elections
Thought it wasn’t possible, I did it as a joke to irritate some old friends, but here I am perplexed its actually possible. All cause I havent claimed a new residence mainly because this isnt permanent and it “isnt permanent” cause yknow, healthcare/welfare/etc due to me a born citizen, and well, technically im on vacation, and my vacation is just too good to leave…. just find what makes you happy <3
This was an overwhelming majority in favour of staying in Canada. Bigger when you consider that a lot of the separatist vote was to send a message not to separate. Even bigger when you realize that the UCP was secretly separatist and did little to oppose the separatists. Taking that into connsideration, this was a powerful vote against separatism and their nonsense grievances. The separatists will obviously say they’ll continue, how else will they get money out of their base. Best thing would be to counter the separatist misinformation to deprogram as many separatists as possible.
I didn’t want to live Alberta, but the Referendum could have sent a message to Ontario to get off their butts and realize its citizens of other provinces are willing to stand up.
But it could have also risked getting to a point where Alberta could vote to leave. So I mean I’m happy with the outcome, but also wish Ontario would stop abusing the other provinces.
cunada is a shathole, people who voted to stay are just too dumb , well ya can’t fix stupid, THE FIGHT WILL CONTINUE!
Why isn’t that Jeffrey Rath in jail for his crimes?
Thank you real Albertans, Canadian patriots! Canada is better with you! Keep Canada, Canada. Keep Canada unified: true north, strong and free.
If you’d rather not live in Canada, then please leave, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Stop trying to destroy us from within, traitors.
76% ain’t immigrants and boomers, that’s the whole schmole. If you don’t like the result you’re free to leave kooks.
Oh damn, I didn’t realize Smith is actually Pro-Remain. I feel like a moron, again. I guess you guys can call me Joe Slow now.
We should replace the premier of alberta and her party of rebels next election.. 76 per cent want to stay she should pay back the 130 million. Also the timing shows no sense and in the end the indigious people would have stopped it anyways they really own the land.
All the immigrants and elbows up boomers did
The urban-rural divide is not unexpected. It shows up in every election.
Not too sure why the rural community would want to separate but it appears they don’t what to stay in Canada, sadly.
Anyone that uses the word “cucks” doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously.
@ anonymous….I was referring to Albertans being unqualified to seperate…..like asking a LABOURER to be a boss. Nothing to do with immigrants. Dont psycho analyze me with your cracker jack, hayseed, church, tin foil hat Jordan peterson assessment. Read carefully first Sigmund Freud!
Yes to the first 9 questions, why does this comment keep getting deleted?
Amongst the 24% of idiots there’s a certain percentage of other idiots that voted to send a message and are not true seperatists, so there’s even less than the 24%. How’s that sending a message working out for you? Idiots
As if this result wasn’t known long before the nonsense of this referendum!
Now to get Smith on board with working with the rest of Canada…
@ BC Resident – Our immigration system already works how you want it to. I stopped to speak with a crew of laborers building a fence in my neighborhood. The foreman was a Sikh from India. He had a PhD in botany. Sometimes the immigrants are laborers because that is the only work they can get. If you engage with these new Canadians you will find that generally they are more skilled than the average person.
You are telling on yourself with your comments.
Imagine voting no to the immigration questions …Albertan leftists are cucks.
@ Incontinentia Buckets – Hogwash. There is a baseline of people that will disagree just for the sake of disagreeing. In February YouGov polled 27K people in the US and found that ~18% wanted their state to succeed.
What a waste of time and money
It is expected the Separatist voters will stand by their convictions and leave Canada. I’m sure there are US citizens, farmers, ranchers etc. who would be happy to do an exchange with them. Go!
Patti F
For those out there that complain about the fact we had a vote, welcome to true democracy (and yes, it is expensive) It is obvious that you are originally from more Left of Centre provinces. The places where a democratic vote is a foreign concept and you just accept government and main stream media telling you what to think, say, and believe.
The rest of the questions indicate a majority that are tired of all the refugees that Ottawa lets into Canada and then has the provinces pay for their integration. Technically, Alberta pays twice. Once through Equalization routed through the Federal government to the other provinces, then again directly for the ones that land here.
Well, that’s that. The people have spoken. That was the whole reason for the vote and I am proud that Premier Smith let us participate.
Now, we watch the PM and his liberal friends. Will he come through with his promises and other words?
Or, do the delays begin to pop up until it is clear all Alberta petroleum projects will be delayed ( for whatever reasons).
Will Carney once again show that his government has patronized Albertans (again).
I for one, will be watching very carefully.
Anonymous @9:43am.
And that’s why anonymous is a village idiot….a woman hater…..a bigot….an idiot….and a sore seperatist loser….Ben where are you? Put anonymous in his place.
Albertans are angry with the poor governance of Canadian and the extreme progressive/socialist policies of Trudeau and Carney that made Canada have one of the weakest economies in the G20.
Shocker. It’s almost like it wasn’t going to. It’s almost like they just threatened it so they could have a pipeline and racist immigration policy.
One time albertans had balls. Now corsets…
No sound
When are they going to get rid of that stupid cnt
Super happy to hear the majority of Alberta voted to stay in Canada. There should be a law passed that prevents these radical groups from trying to do what they tried to do. Make it illegal. We live in a beautiful country. But we have issues that need to be addressed. We’ve become a diminishing Christian country. God is not mentioned in main stream media and we kill our unborn and kill our citizens who can legally kill themselves due to health issues. Continuing these will surely break our country.
Have to feel sorry for the under educated BC resident who does not understand economics, politics or how the world works. Certainly not one of the rising stars but fits in nicely with the BC “block everything” crowd. Enjoy your new conservative government who may bring some relevance back to your province.
Oh. And to all the comments to @ bc resident ….how are you feeling today? What does victory feel like? You guys sure showed us. Your ” freedom convoy” was your 15 minutes of fame. Hang on to that for dear life because that’s as close to the sun as your ever going to get. A bigger man doesn’t gloat….but what the hell?! Suck eggs you antivax, freedom convoy, tin foil hat, flat earth believing, conspiracy theorist traitors. Elvis is dead, vaccines are why your still alive, the freedom convoy was just an excuse to party and the earth is actually round!! Enjoy your day.
My Canada is ALL, Je suis fiere d’etre Canadien, do not even even try to divide it . . .
The same group of people complaining about losing money to the rest of Canada and being treated poorly waste a ton of money to once again (freedom convoy) treat their countrymen poorly. It’s like living with a self-important rich kid college roommate who never goes to any classes and will pay rent but not do chores that help the house run well, all while thinking they are the smartest person in the room. We’ve now paid more attention to you; please end the tantrum.
Alberta is the fat and sassy chick who has to settle for us lessers because she thought she was going to get out there and be Ms.America and take over the world! It didn’t quite workout that way so she had to go back to her ” loser” husband/ country and pretend nothing happened!
@Ben
So when the Green Party gets 2% of the vote, they should just move on? Hogwash!
If you believe in something, you keep fighting for it.
The referendum was a warning shot for Canada, not a kill shot for Alberta Independence.
@BC Resident 851am. Respectfully, the other side is not a monolith. I think we need to tone down the rhetoric towards the separatists at this point. Now is a time for healing. It’s over.
From now on!! Only qualified people need apply!!! For politics, for separation, for WHATEVER!!! When the sign says you must be ” this tall” to get on the ride, then you MUST BE ” those tall” to get on the ride!!
If a jobsite needs a superintendent do you try to find one from the group of labourers?! What are we doing here? Side note…..why are we listening to Pierre and Doerksen?! Both can’t hold the position even if they win!!! What are we doing here? That’s like someone in the real world talk and talk and talk to get the job, take up everyone’s time, money and hope and then you hire him and he tells you no thanks! What are we doing here people?!!!
Rigged! Cheated! Liberal conspiracy! Waaaaaaahhhh!
That logic that the hayseeds were going to takeover and create their own country is like going down to skid row to find a heart surgeon!!! IT’S ABSOLUTELY R#TARDED!!! Just like the riots in France are about school supplies?! What are we doing here? Why do we pretend…absolute horse poo!!
Yes to the other 9 why is everyone focused on 10th question.
Now lets see some representation for Alberta within Canada or are we going to ignore that?
The separatists had their chance to persuade the people. The people have spoken. In this democratic vote, accepting defeat is just as essential as claiming victory. Accept the result and move on. Only those who are unreasonable and not democratic will continue to contest the result.
YES!!! We ALL knew this when they couldn’t get enough signatures,THEN MIRACULOUSLY found enough which then Danielle then pushed through. We’ve known this for over a year!!! What a waste of Canada’s and the World’s time, oxygen and money. It’s freedom convoy 2.0. Who would’ve thought flat earth, tin foil hat, convoy supporting, antivax, elvis is still alive believing ostrich farmers weren’t going to take over the world?! Wow what a mystery! No cult in the WORLD has ever been successful. Not Jim Jones not David Koresh. Yet we all played the game. Oh BTW, now your sweetheart is batting for the other team again. Now shes a patriot. She tried to jump ship to team USA and got rejected, now she’s stuck with her fellow Canadians . Also now daddy is going to buy her a pipeline! BUILD A WALL and get this over with. She’s still anti Canada btw….she’s just using us because no one else will have her.
That separatist Rath needs a bigger repertoire of words rather than “you know” in each bloody sentence.
What a goofball.
Good result overall. But, we should remember that the remain side is the base number rejecting separatism because the separation vote apparently includes a number of voters intent on sending a message and not on separating. Too bad the pollsters, who were accurate, didn’t look into separatist intentions to determine how many are actually intent on leaving; probably only about half of them.
Regardless, the separatist leaders have all claimed victory and intend to carry on the fight. Of course they will. The will of the majority means nothing to them. Besides, how can they raise money from their supporters if they accept the overwhelming decision to stay in Canada.
Maybe Alberta voters will get rid of Premier Smith and the separatists who’ve been hiding in the UCP and get a capable government for a change. Probably too much to hope for.
Reading these comments it appears there were 10 questions which matches the average IQ in this province
I would never vote yes to any of the 9 prejudicial questions, as even suggesting Smith have any power mandate like that from the people is dangerous. She asked for those immigrants and now that she has them she wants to disenfranchise them. At least she stays true to her character.
By this time next year, hopefully the courts will have repo-ed all of Rath’s horses and his ranch…
Exorcise the traitors.
Who knew that would be a huge waste of time and money?
Quesrion 2
It would be good if they can do it but what about the gray area? because of the improper rules and regulations, broken immigration system and super slow process, what services should provide to those candidates that are in gray area? is Alberta going to find an island sonewhere and keep people there to process thier request like Australia?!
QUESTION 1
population is power. not only the province but also the entire country need to increase its population in an orginized and well managed ways.
Immigrants voted to reduce immigration…!
Well, it’s a minority with a loud voice that keeps repeating the same nonsense. It’s time for accountability and justice for everyone involved, including members of the provincial government and others. The federal government should launch an investigation and ensure that anyone found guilty of wrongdoing faces the appropriate legal consequences. Traitors should be in JAIL.
I dont think anyone with intelligence thought the deperatists would win
The resilts of the other questions were far more telling
They wont get much attention though because they go.against popular narratives
The media must know that 5% of the population will never be happy no matter what they get. The media needs to stop promoting the 5% era with air time and publicity. 5% ers such as Jeffery Rath who is already planning his next attack should be denied any airtime at all.
Starve
You dummies can suck carnhole till the end of time you’re all DIRT to US

Democracy has spoken. Let’s move on.
A colossal waste of time and resources
Good now roundup the rural idiots that believe they want separation and offer them a place to live in the USA. And to listen to this buffoon as I’m typing this who’s talking trash about Daniel Smith. Why don’t you drive the bus to United States and fuel another fire see where that gets you.
Looks like the USA will need to save us
G Ingraham jump
Starve, enjoy starving
Awesome news. Let’s move on. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦👏👏👏👏
Politicians are the biggest dorks on the planet. This whole thing was just a massive waste of money. Not a damn thing will change.
Maybe all these boomer losers can shut up about politics for awhile.
Or not. That generation needs to go by the wayside already.
Seppy tears are amazing this AM. Now su. We dont have to listen to the crying anymore
Yawn
We knew a majority of Albertans didnt want to separate. Maybe the pipeline can be canceled now.
Time to investigate the separatist traitors for their ties to foreign i.e. American interests. Prosecute these traitors and lock them up indefinitely. Look into what Smith was doing with Trump at Mar-a-Lago too.
