CALGARY – Police have charged a 17-year-old in connection to a southeast car crash that killed a 21-year-old man.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013.
Police say a Chrysler 300 was travelling southbound on Bow Bottom Trail when the driver lost control, causing the car to hit the curb and roll onto its roof, coming to a stop near 146 Avenue S.E.
EMS found a 21-year-old man dead at the scene. He had been ejected from the car during the crash and was pinned under the vehicle.
Three others who were in the car at the time left the scene, but were later located by police.
Of the other occupants, a 16-year-old male and 17-year-old female suffered only minor injuries.
Initially, police said they weren’t sure who the driver was, but have now determined it was the 17-year-old.
Investigators say she didn’t have a valid driver’s license, and had taken the vehicle without the consent of the owner.
Police have now charged the young driver, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, hit and run, operating a motor vehicle without holding a valid operator’s license and theft of a vehicle without consent.
Both alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the collision.
