CALGARY – Police are investigating the bizarre circumstances surrounding a crash in the city’s southeast on Friday morning that killed a 21-year-old man.
Officers say a car was travelling southbound on Bow Bottom Trail around 2 a.m. when the driver lost control, causing the car to hit the curb and roll onto its roof, eventually coming to a stop near 146 Avenue S.E.
One of the vehicle’s five occupants was found dead at the scene after apparently being ejected from the car during the crash.
Investigators say four other occupants got out of the vehicle and left the scene, but were eventually apprehended.
Of the occupants, a 16-year-old male and 17-year-old female sustained minor injuries while a 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old female were uninjured.
Police are in the process of interviewing the passengers, but say none of them are cooperating.
“I believe more than at least one of the occupants had dealings with the police before, and there’s a reluctance to be forthcoming with police,” says Cst. Darrell Chapman, Collision Reconstruction Unit Calgary Police.
Police aren’t sure who the driver was, but say they will be able to figure it out by examining the DNA left on the air bag.
Officials don’t believe any of the occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, as is alcohol.
“The vehicle had actually impacted a construction zone area further north on Bow Bottom Trail,” says Chapman. “It ran through barricades and struck several pylons causing damage to the vehicle.”
Charges could be laid against those who left the scene of the crash.
It’s the second deadly crash in Calgary in a span of just a few hours.
Police rushed to the intersection of Beddington Trail N.E. and Beddington Boulevard N.E. around 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Officers say the 50-year-old man died after a collision between a Toyota Corolla and a Honda Pilot.
The Toyota struck the Honda, before slamming into a traffic pole.
The driver of the Toyota was extracted from the vehicle and transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Honda was uninjured.
Police say the cause of the collision is still being investigated with speed and a traffic signal infraction being considered. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
