Singer Steven Page goes underground for new food series

TORONTO — Canadian singer Steven Page said Thursday his years of performing have taught him one particularly valuable lesson: Don’t eat a big meal before a show.

“You burp,” he explained, adding that he can tell when other singers are holding back a belch.

“You can watch one and go, ‘He just burped. You can see him [suppressing] one.'”

Page didn’t have to worry as much about eructation while taping The Illegal Eater, a new series that explores underground restaurants and pop-up eateries. It debuts Oct. 22 on Travel + Escape.

“I didn’t get sick once,” said Page during an appearance on Global’s The Morning Show. He did, however, gain about 20 pounds from sampling the covert cuisine.

One dish he couldn’t stomach was balut — a duck embryo boiled alive and eaten in the shell — at a Filipino pop-up in New Orleans.

“I couldn’t do it,” Page said, citing the texture of the feathers.

Page said he enjoyed taking a break from music to eat his way across the continent.

“I love food,” he said. “The fun part for me was being the proxy for the audience.”
