Calgary police are searching for a man following a fatal shooting in the city’s southeast Sunday morning.
Police and paramedics arrived at the scene on 17 Avenue near 34 Street S.E. around 4:40 a.m. to find a man suffering injuries from a gunshot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said witnesses reported hearing gunshots and then saw a man flee the scene. The male suspect is described as being approximately 30 years old, 6’ 2″ tall, with a medium build and short black hair.
Dozens of witnesses were still at the scene Sunday morning as the investigation continued and police scoured CCTV.
People who live in the area say they’re saddened to hear what happened, but say crime is a constant reality in the neighbourhood.
One of those is Caitlin Verquin, who lives right near the bar.
“It sounded really loud, it was bangs or something like that,” said Verquin. “I thought it was maybe somebody in the neighbourhood just outbursting, having a rough time, because this a not really safe neighbourhood. There’s a lot of stuff that happens in this neighbourhood, at night especially.
“I love this city. I’ve lived in this city my whole life and to think that something such as a shooting is happening right in my community, that’s scary” she added.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
