UPDATED: 2 gunned down in Conception Bay South, police search for shooter

CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, N.L. – The search continued Wednesday for at least one suspect after the fatal shooting two people at a strip mall in eastern Newfoundland.

Police say the shooting happened Tuesday around 7 p.m. at the Villa Nova Plaza in Conception Bay South.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has released few details about what happened, but local radio station VOCM is reporting that the shooting took place inside a doctor’s office. The doctor who owns the office said none of his staff were hurt, but he declined to offer further details.

Residents living near the strip mall were asked to stay inside and lock their doors Tuesday night as police searched for the suspect.

Local residents confirmed to Global News that a man and a woman were shot and killed.

Const. Talia Murphy confirmed two people were pronounced dead at the scene, but would not release any other details on the victims.

She did not speculate on a motive for the crime, and said there was no description of the suspect.

Murphy also wouldn’t say how many suspects police were looking for.

Meanwhile, the Eastern School District says three of its schools have been closed for Wednesday, all of them in the Conception Bay South area.

Conception Bay South is about 25 kilometres southwest of St. John’s.
