6 people shot at back of Ajax, Ont., restaurant: police

Six people are injured after an overnight shooting at the back of an Ajax, Ont., restaurant, police say.

Durham Regional Police said emergency crews were called at around 1:20 a.m. Monday for a shooting on Harwood Avenue, south of Highway 401.

Staff Sgt. Tony Romano said one of the victims was in life-threatening condition, while the others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Romano added that three of the victims were men and three were women.

He said when officers first arrived, five victims were identified and a sixth was later located at a hospital.

Durham Region paramedics told Global News they transported two patients to a Toronto trauma centre and one to Lakeridge Health in Ajax. Paramedics didn’t have further information.

Det. Kristy Mackinnon, who is leading the investigation into the incident, said a barbecue that was advertised online was taking place at the time of the shooting.

“We know that there was a lot of people in attendance so we’re hoping that some individuals who were here would be able to come forward with some more information for us to help us determine exactly what happened,” she said.

Police said one or more suspects fled the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle. Mackinnon did not confirm if the incident was a drive-by shooting.

There is no information on a possible motive.

Mackinnon said the victims were being treated “at a variety of hospitals throughout the GTA.”
