Two people were killed and two more injured after a car ran a stop sign and was hit by another car on a major highway west of Edmonton Thursday afternoon.
The collision happened about 50 kilometres west of Edmonton, on Highway 16 at Range Road 33 between Stony Plain and Wabamun Lake.
RCMP said the initial investigation shows a Toyota Corolla on the range road failed to stop at a stop sign at the Yellowhead, and collided with a Honda Civic that was going west on the highway.
The two occupants of the Toyota — an 89-year-old woman from Wabamun and a 26-year-old man from Spruce Grove — were declared dead at the scene, police said.
AHS and RCMP said the two women in the Honda were taken to hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition, and one of them had just minor injuries.
STARS Air Ambulance responded to the area but a spokesperson said they were not medically required and did not transport any patients.
Two cars were spotted at the scene. One was in the westbound lanes and the other vehicle was seen in the ditch on the side of the highway.
Traffic along westbound Highway 16 was diverted for a few hours while police investigated and cleared the scene.
