Willow Park students to temporarily move to Viscount Bennett

CALGARY – Students at Willow Park School will be temporarily moved to a different campus after a fire on Wednesday that caused extensive damage to their facility.

One classroom at the southeast school was completed gutted in the blaze, while three others are structurally compromised.

The entire school sustained severe smoke damage and contamination from noxious fumes.

Officials say all of the contents, furniture and equipment at the school will require cleaning, and all of the ceiling tiles, fixtures and lockers may need to be removed and replaced.

They’ll also have to check the indoor air quality before the school can be safely reopened.

Because of the large amount of repair work which will have to be completed, students at Willow Park will be moved to the Viscount Bennett Centre, at 2519 Richmond Rd. S.W. for an indefinite period of time.

Officials say the details aren’t yet finalized, but they hope the move will take place as soon as possible, perhaps by the middle of next week.

In a release posted on the CBE website, officials say woving the entire school community into the same building allows the art-centred, alternative program to continue with the least amount of disruption to student learning.

The CBE says they are waiting for an engineering report and a report from their insurance company before determining what kind of repair work will be required, and the timelines for completion.

Transportation will be provided to the Viscount Bennett Centre. Transit and maps are available online.

For students who did not take the bus to school and now require transportation, it will be available at no cost.
